The Phuket PSU Hospital specialising in complicated diseases set to open in 2027

Phuket’s newest hospital, specialising in complicated diseases, is set to open by 2027. The Cabinet says it has a budget of 3.14 Billion THB for the new hospital, which will be named PSU Hospital Phuket. Mai Khao district will be the location of the hospital with the hospital’s design reportedly already in review, according to Phan Thongchumnum, Deputy Dean of Prince of Songkla University Phuket Campus.

“If everything goes as planned; the construction will start within the next budget year [starting Oct 1, 2023]. The construction is expected to be completed in 2027.”
According to Phuket News, the hospital was initially planned to feature 300 beds, but the newly-revised budget will now allow for 500 beds. The hospital is acting upon the Cabinet’s recommendation to only accept patients with complicated diseases who have been transferred from government hospitals.

“There are patients with complicated diseases in the Andaman provinces of Phuket, Krabi and Phang Nga being transferred from Vachira Phuket Hospital, the main government hospital in the area, to the PSU Hospital in Hat Yai for treatment.”
He furthered that figures showed 13,500 patient transfers from Vachira, with 9,000 patients being transferred in the last year alone.

“This shows that we need to have a hospital capable of supporting these people.”

“The centre will build confidence in medical care among locals and tourists visiting Thailand and provinces in the Andaman region.”
He says that PSU Phuket is preparing for the upcoming hospital by opening the international programme of the Faculty of Medicine. One class from the programme has reportedly already graduated with the second class currently underway. The PSU Phuket campus currently offers 25 programmes for qualifying in specialised medical expertise. Currently, Phuket has two main private hospitals, Phuket International Hospital and Bangkok Hospital Phuket. Those hospitals cater to foreigners as the staff and physicians are said to be able to speak English and other foreign languages.
