Nonna Nella by Lenzi
Francesco Lenzi, the culinary genius behind the upscale Lenzi Tuscan Kitchen, and the former chef of Medici at Hotel Muse, abandons fine-dining efforts at his new eatery, opting instead for more a casual space that that spotlights traditional Italian fare. Nonna Nella by Lenzi is a tribute to the chef’s Sicilian-born grandmother Sebastianella Tusa, whose nickname is, apparently, Nella (nonna means “grandmother” in Italian). The venue exudes the simple charm of a neighborhood restaurant, merging a bistro feel with a delicatessen offering. The front showcases fresh produce, including ham and cheese, most of which are produced by Lenzi’s family in Tuscany. Inside, a spacious room is divided into a wood-heavy dining area and a modern open kitchen equipped with Italianimported kitchen appliances. The menu is a testament to Lenzi’s close attention to produce; the front page lists artisanal products from his family’s farm such as bazzetta (cured pork leg, THB 250), truffle infused cured pork sausage (THB 350) and bazzon cotto (cooked ham, THB 400). The menu also features items, such as fish ham, which are imported from other artisanal farms in Italy. We opted for the smoked sturgeon, which is lean and flavorsome, served with grilled zucchini and feta cheese, and drizzled with mustard dressing. Benefitting from an in-house pasta machine, Nonna Nella is able to produce fresh egg-based pasta that go into dishes like spaghettoni all'amatriciana (THB 400), spaghetti’s fatter brother topped with mild tomato sauce, Pecorino Romano, onion and guanciale. The pizza here has a light and crispy crust, thanks to a dough that’s left to rise for 72 hours. We recommend the Nonna Nella (THB 520), which comes heaped with mozzarella, pancetta, Tuscan blood sausage, garlic and chili. For dessert, options include Lenzi’s signature tiramisu (THB 220) and a mildly sweet panna cotta (THB 200) topped with your choice of fruit jam. Overall, Nonna Nella by Lenzi is that fun, casual and Italian-done-right kind of eatery that upmarket Wireless Road has always needed. You will see us coming back for more of Lenzi’s gourmet delights.
Vivin
Bangkok residents have been showing more interest in buying local ingredients or products to support Thai farmers. It’s now easier to access these products, thanks to VIVIN, a grocery and restaurant that champions goods made by artisans across the country. VIVIN Grocery was founded six years ago by Frenchman Nicolas Vivin, who originally wanted to promote homemade foie gras, based on his grandma’s recipe, together with local products from the many different provinces of Thailand. Nicolas first put up a pop-up store at the Bangkok Farmer’s Market, then expanded with shops in The EmQuartier and Central Chidlom. Both shops closed and Nicolas and his wife, Samantha Proyrungtong, relocated operations to Ekamai Complex. The new VIVIN Grocery, apart from selling local ingredients, such as goat cheese from Chiang Mai and sausages made from local pork, and a curated selection of “made in France” products, now serves freshly-cooked fare made with the same products they sell in the store. Customers can now sit and consume their food or order French-style dishes, including duck confit (THB 380) where a duck leg is deep-fried in duck oil until it’s crispy on the outside, and served with mashed potatoes and bread. We’re also huge fans of Blue Cheese Burger (THB 340), which is served with Thai blue cheese, a soft bun and a juicy meat patty, and of Fluffy Omelettes (THB 220 to THB 290), a bouncy Normandy-style omelette cooked with cheese of your choice: classic, goat cheese or artisanal cheese. VIVIN has more offerings that are worth tasting, including baguette sandwiches, salads, steaks and beautifully made desserts.
BBQ38
Apart from cheese and cold cuts, this shop sells thick slabs of meat that you can barbecue at home (ideal this time around when going out for juicy pork ribs isn’t quite easy). BBQ38 also works as a restaurant, so it’s double the convenience to get cold appetizers or scrumptious pasta delivered.
Cagette Canteen and Deli
Put together a tray of Western nibbles with help from this Chong Nonsi shop. Cagette specializes in French cheeses, rotisserie products, and choice meats and sausages. Add some of their freshly baked breads and tasty dips to your spread.
El Mercado
This supermarket purveys, aside from homemade cheeses and charcuterie, fresh seafood, baked breads and pastries, and choice fruits and vegetables. It’s also a restaurant that’s always packed with discerning foodies.
Food Delite
If you need to stock up on Italian produce, don’t overlook this online grocer by Lucilla Co., LTD. The shop displays a mouth-watering array of top-quality products from the many regions of Italy, from salami and ham, to burrata and mozzarella, to different types of pastas.
Sloanes
Open for more than 10 years, Sloane's is one of the most popular delis in Bangkok. The brand, which supplies to many hotels and restaurants in Thailand, sells meats, cheese and other deli products sourced from free-range farms and artisan producers from all over Thailand. They even provide dog food!
